There are some preliminary things you need to sort out before you go ahead and make an investment in a corn snake:

Make sure that this is not just a fanciful notion and you are really prepared to take on being a good owner of your pet.

Make sure that the corn snake you are going to buy or acquire is not an endangered species, seek legal advice about licenses for household pets before you buy or adopt any exotic pet.

Start finding out about how corn snake behave, adapt to their environment

Ensure you are aware of what food supply is required and how you will make sure there is a steady supply

Find out about cages, humidity, lighting and health and safety

Talk to your local pet store or snake breeder and ask them as much as you can about how to care for corn snakes, they will have years of experience to pass on to you.

Learn about the different species available for sale and the appropriate snake size for an adult or a child handler.

If you are buying a corn snake for someone else you really should not be buying it as a surprise gift! If you are buying it for a child you really need to consider the safety aspects of giving a child a snake as a present. So include your child in the preliminary research and discuss with the pet shop or breeder the suitability of the snake being handled by a child

Find out what responsibilities you will need to carry out in terms of the health and fitness of your corn snake. If your local veterinarian does not know about corn snakes ask them to put you in touch with a Vet that does know about reptiles. If not there is lots of good information posted on the Internet by veterinarian.

Join forums and support groups

Be prepared to learn from experience.

Good luck and enjoy your new pet.

Hi, if you have always wanted to own a corn snake as a pet either because you are an avid reptile lover or if you have just seen a video or read a book about them you have come to this site wanting to know how you can acquire an exotic pet like the corn snake. These posts will give you some information on how to go about it.

OK, so if you live in North America you may be tempted to just go and get yourself a corn snake from the wild because this is a cheap and what seems an easy option. DO NOT DO THIS! Taking corn snakes from their natural habitat should not be or never be considered because it will affect wildlife ecology because these creatures are very essential in managing the rodent populations and are part of a healthy ecosystems which include maintaining their population in the wild.

The most common way in acquiring a corn snake is visiting your local pet shop. Find out if your local pet shop breeds these reptiles. You could also use the internet to find breeders and, if you are already clear about what kind of snake you want based on its color etc, this might be the easiest option for you especially if your local pet shop does not supply corn snakes.
